Insecten; de één gruwelt ervan, de ander heeft er een fascinatie voor. Bugs Buddy is eigenlijk alleen maar dat; Insecten.
.. kaartjes met insecten… (oké… en een paar gekleurde blokjes).
Bugs Buddy is een klein spelletje voor 2-4 personen vanaf een jaar of 8.
Wat wij ervan vinden? Dat lees je in deze review.

Bugs Buddy – Insecten zijn je vrienden

Bugs Buddy ziet er op het eerste gezicht simpel uit. Een katoenen zakje met daarin kleine kaartjes met verschillende insecten en kleine blokjes in 4 kleuren.
In totaal zijn er in het spel 9 insectensoorten te ontdekken.

Insecten (Insecta) zijn een klasse van zespotige, ongewervelde dieren die behoren tot de geleedpotigen (Arthropoda). Met meer dan een miljoen beschreven soorten vormen de insecten verreweg de grootste klasse binnen het dierenrijk.

Zelf heb ik een fascinatie voor insecten. En dan vooral voor de gevleugelde exemplaren. Denk hierbij aan vlinders. Maar ook torren en wantsen. Heb je je er wel eens in verdiept? Er zitten zulke mooie exemplaren tussen. Mijn fascinatie met vlinders is ontstaan toen ik nog ‘jong’ was. De fascinatie voor de kleine kriebeldieren is ontstaan nadat ik bij ons in de achtertuin een nest met vuurwantsen vond, wat een prachtige beestjes!
Wist je trouwens dat insecten ontzettend nuttig voor ons zijn? Ze ruimen verrot voedsel en kadavers op en bestuiven onze gewassen en bloemen. En dat laatste doen echt niet alleen de bijen! Ook kevers, vlinders en vliegen bestuiven onze bloemen en planten.

Maar genoeg over insecten, terug naar het spel!

Het doosje is om op verliefd te worden, tenminste, als het je aanspreekt (mij dus wel ;))
De speluitleg bestaat uit nog niet eens 1 A4tje. De regels zijn ontzettend simpel, na het lezen vermoed ik dat Mikolaj (ruim 6,5) dit spel prima gaat begrijpen, dus hij zal dan ook het eerste slachtoffer worden waarmee ik dit spel ga uitproberen. Het is overigens niet perse een kinderspel, maar ik heb zo het idee dat het bij kinderen wel goed gaat werken. Het thema ‘kriebelbeestjes’ helpt daar vast bij mee.

Hoe wordt het gespeeld?

Elke speler kiest een kleur en neemt, afhankelijk van het aantal spelers, een bepaald aantal blokjes van die kleur.
Het doel van het spel is als eerst al je blokjes kwijtraken.

Nu neemt elke speler 4 kaartjes uit de zak. Deze houd hij geheim voor de andere spelers.
De kaartjes hebben een voor- en achterzijde waarop verschillende insecten staan.

De startspeler plaatst één van de kaartjes op tafel en legt er één van zijn blokjes onder.
Na zijn beurt vult hij zijn hand weer aan door een nieuw kaartje uit de zak te pakken.

De volgende speler mag nu een kaartje op tafel plaatsen. Hij kan een nieuw insect plaatsen, waaronder hij dan één blokje plaatst.
Hij kan er ook voor kiezen op een bestaande verzameling dieren uit te breiden. In dat geval verwijdert hij de blokjes die al onder deze verzameling liggen en plaatst zoveel blokjes onder de verzameling als de verzameling (nu) groot is.
Er zijn 3 belangrijke regels;
– Een speler moet altijd precies zoveel blokjes plaatsen als de verzameling (na het plaatsen van het kaartje) groot is, nooit meer of minder.
– Een speler mag geen verzameling uitbreiden waar zijn eigen blokjes onder liggen. Met andere woorden; een speler kan er niet zelf voor zorgen dat hij blokjes terug krijgt. Hij mag alleen verzamelingen uitbreiden waar blokjes van een ander onder liggen.
– Er kunnen niet meerdere verzamelingen van hetzelfde dier zijn.

De speler die als eerst zijn blokjes kwijt is, wint. Mochten alle kaartjes uitgespeeld zijn en er is nog geen speler zonder blokjes, dan wint de speler die op dat moment de minste blokjes over heeft.

Wat vinden wij van Bugs Buddy?

Ik speelde Bugs Buddy met kinderen en volwassenen en met verschillende aantallen spelers. De eerste keer speelde ik het namelijk met Leonore en Mikolaj en waren we nog geen 10 minuten bezig toen Mikolaj de winst pakte. We hadden lol tijdens het spelen, maar het voelde alsof we ‘maar wat aan het doen waren’. Daarna speelde ik het dus nog met volwassenen en ook eens met 2 spelers. Eigenlijk veranderde er weinig aan het spelverloop. De duur van het spel is verschillend. Soms ben je met 5 minuten klaar, soms duurt het 20 minuten.

Naast Mikolaj (ruim 6,5) kan ook Leonore (net 5) dit spel prima (mee)spelen. De 8+ op de doos is dan ook erg overtrokken. In eerste instantie dacht ik hierdoor dat ik misschien iets gemist had, een tactiek? een verkeerd gelezen spelregel? Maar dit bleek allemaal niet het geval. Bugs Buddy is voor een groot deel gewoon doen wat je kan en kijken hoe je uitkomt. Wat dat betreft valt het voor mij in categorie spellen L.A.M.A. en Skip-bo. Het heeft weinig inhoud, weinig omhanden, maar zorgt wel voor plezier. Met als groot voordeel dat jonge kinderen en (zeer) onervaren spelers mee kunnen spelen.
Bugs Buddy heeft dan wel weer een leuk thema wat leuk uitgewerkt is. Zelf ben ik wel fan van de illustraties en de vormgeving (dus ook de mini-kaartjes en de kleuren van de blokjes).

Bugs Buddy is denk ik geen spel voor de gemiddelde Bordspelwereld bezoeker. Maar zoek je een spel om met je tante te spelen, die normaal alleen skip-bo speelt? Of zoek je een cadeautje voor je neef die gek is op L.A.M.A.? Dan is Bugs Buddy een leuke afwisseling!

Bugs Buddy – Insects are your friends

At first glance, Bugs Buddy looks simple. A cotton bag containing small cards with different insects and small blocks in four colors.
In total, there are nine insect species to discover in the game.

Insects (Insecta) are a class of six-legged, invertebrate animals belonging to the arthropods (Arthropoda). With more than a million described species, insects are by far the largest class in the animal kingdom.

I myself have a fascination for insects, especially the winged ones, such as butterflies, but also beetles and bugs. Have you ever looked into them? There are some really beautiful specimens. My fascination with butterflies began when I was ‘young’. My fascination with the little creepy-crawlies began after I found a nest of firebrats in our backyard. What beautiful creatures!
Did you know that insects are incredibly useful to us? They clean up rotten food and carcasses and pollinate our crops and flowers. And it’s not just bees that do the latter! Beetles, butterflies, and flies also pollinate our flowers and plants.
But enough about insects, back to the game!

The box is to fall in love with, at least if it appeals to you (it does to me )
The game instructions are less than one page long. The rules are incredibly simple. After reading them, I suspect that Mikolaj (6.5) will understand this game perfectly, so he will be the first victim I try it out on. It’s not necessarily a children’s game, but I have a feeling it will work well with kids. The ‘creepy crawlies’ theme will certainly help.

How do you play?

Each player chooses a color and takes a certain number of blocks of that color, depending on the number of players.
The aim of the game is to be the first to get rid of all your blocks.

Each player takes four cards from the bag. These cards are kept secret from the other players.
The cards have different insects on the front and back.

The starting player places one of the cards on the table and places one of their blocks underneath it.
After their turn, they replenish their hand by taking a new card from the bag.

The next player may now place a card on the table. He can place a new insect, under which he then places one block.
He can also choose to expand an existing collection of animals. In that case, he removes the blocks that are already under this collection and places as many blocks under the collection as the collection (now) contains.

There are 3 important rules:
– A player must always place exactly as many cubes as the collection (after placing the card) contains, never more or less.
– A player may not expand a collection that contains his own cubes. In other words, a player cannot ensure that he gets cubes back. He may only expand collections that contain cubes belonging to another player.
– There cannot be multiple collections of the same animal.

The player who gets rid of their blocks first wins. If all cards have been played, or no one can play anymore, and there is still a player with blocks, the player with the fewest blocks left wins.

What do we think of Bugs Buddy?
I played Bugs Buddy with children and adults and with different numbers of players. The first time I played it with Leonore and Mikolaj, we had been playing for less than 10 minutes when Mikolaj won. We had fun playing, but it felt like we were just ‘doing something’. After that, I played it with adults and also with two players. Actually, little changed in the course of the game. The duration of the game varies. Sometimes you’re done in 5 minutes, sometimes it takes 20 minutes.

Besides: Mikolaj (over 6.5), Leonore (just 5) can also play this game just fine. The 8+ on the box is therefore very exaggerated. At first, I thought I might have missed something, a tactic? A misread rule? But this turned out not to be the case. Bugs Buddy is largely just doing what you can and seeing how you end up. In that respect, for me it falls into the category of games such as L.A.M.A. and Skip-bo. It has little substance, little to do, but it is fun. The big advantage is that young children and (very) inexperienced players can join in.
Removing other players’ blocks provides the necessary interaction.
Bugs Buddy does have a theme that is nicely developed. I personally am enthusiastic about the illustrations and the design (including the mini cards and the colors of the blocks).

I don’t think Bugs Buddy is a game for the average board game enthusiast. But if you’re looking for a game to play with your aunt, who normally only plays Skip-Bo, or a gift for your nephew who loves L.A.M.A., then Bugs Buddy is a fun change of pace!
