Fit the Fishes

In Fit the Fishes maakt elke speler zijn eigen aquarium, vol met vissen, voedsel en algen.
Wie dit het beste doet, wint. Maar natuurlijk is het ook gewoon heel leuk om een mooi aquarium te vullen en in te kleuren.
Fit the Fishes is een roll-and-write (of eigenlijk; roll-and-draw) voor kinderen vanaf 4 jaar.

Eerste indruk

Ik ging, in tegenstelling tot wat ik meestal doe, geheel ongeïnformeerd dit spel in. Toen ik de doos opende, had ik dus nog geen idee wat voor spel ik in handen had.
De doos sprak me niet direct aan, maar is wel ontzettend vrolijk en kleurrijk, wat je verwacht bij een kinderspel.
En toen; Ik las de spelregels en was razend enthousiast, ik kon niet wachten dit spel te spelen. Wat op zich best opmerkelijk is. Fit the Fishes is namelijk een kinderspel en ik ben geen kind.
Daarnaast is het een roll-and-write, niets mis mee, vind ik best leuk op z’n tijd, maar niet iets waar ik nou ontzettend warm voor loop…. normaal gesproken.
Na het bestuderen van de spelregels sommeerde ik mijn kinderen dus om een spelletje te doen…
Hoe wordt het spel gespeeld?

In het spelregelboekje staan 3 verschillende niveaus beschreven, die allemaal iets andere voorwaarden en regels hebben. Maar in de basis wordt Fit the Fishes als volgt gespeeld;
Elke speler krijgt een aquarium en op tafel wordt het rondespoor met een rondemarkeerder geplaatst.
Ombeurten gooien spelers met de dobbelsteen. Dat wat de dobbelsteen laat zien, moet de speler nu in zijn aquarium tekenen*.
Dit tekenen gebeurt door middel van het overtrekken van de verschillende stencils.
Afhankelijk van het niveau dat gespeeld wordt, worden er 5 of 7 rondes gespeeld.
Na deze rondes tellen de spelers hun scores op.
In de basis geldt: Elke vis levert 1 punt op. Vissenvoer levert een punt op wanneer deze in een vis zit van dezelfde vorm. Vissen leveren een extra punt op als ze algen aanraken van dezelfde soort (hoekig of afgerond).
Verder heeft elk niveau een aantal extra elementen (zoals een schildpad en een schatkist), die het spel moeilijker en uitdagender maken.

*Ik vond de spelregels hier niet heel duidelijk; ik vermoed dat elke speler voor zichzelf gooit en zijn eigen resultaat tekent. Maar je zou het ook zo kunnen spelen dat alle spelers hetzelfde tekenen.

Wat vinden wij van Fit the Fishes?

Vol enthousiasme begon ik aan een spelletje Fit the Fishes met de kinderen. Leonore speelt alles mee, Mikolaj is een stuk kritischer.
Het enthousiasme werd tijdens het spel absoluut niet gedrukt. Leonore speelde met ontzettend veel plezier.
Wel vond zij (4,5) het nog wat lastig om de voorwaarden te onthouden, mogelijk is een spiekbriefje hiervoor handig.
Maar ook Mikolaj (6,5) vond het een leuk spel en deed gewillig mee en dat is best wel uniek, want hij is zeer selectief in de spellen die hij speelt.
Als volwassene vond ik het ook een erg leuk spelletje om (mee) te doen.

Groot voordeel vind ik de grote verscheidenheid aan elementen en voorwaarden. In het regelboekje worden 3 niveaus beschreven, maar in principe kun je zelf bepalen welke elementen je toevoegt en/of weglaat. Dit maakt het spel goed aanpasbaar voor elke leeftijd.
Het thema is fantastisch uitgewerkt en de gekleurde aquariums, gek gevormde vissen en de wiebelende algen doen het ontzettend goed bij de kinderen.
De stencils waaruit moet worden getekend zijn stevig en zorgen ervoor dat zelfs de jongste kinderen prima hun vissen in hun aquarium kunnen ‘overtrekken’.
De bijgeleverde kleurpotloden, om na afloop je tekening in te kleuren, zijn een leuke toevoeging.

Fit the Fishes is een leuke kennismaking met de roll-and-write, maar dan zonder getallen, kruisen of afstrepen, maar door het maken van een mooie tekening. Die je na afloop ook nog eens kan inkleuren.

Als kinderspel krijgt dit spel van ons een dikke 8. Vanaf 4 jaar is het makkelijkste niveau (met enige hulp) goed te spelen. Voor oudere kinderen kun je kijken welke elementen je toevoegt om het leuk te houden.
Voor volwassenen is dit óók een leuk spel om (mee) te spelen, dus ook als familie- of gezinsspel krijgt deze ook een zeer ruime voldoende.

In Fit the Fishes, each player creates his own aquarium, full of fish, food and algae.
Whoever does this best wins. But of course, it is also just great fun to fill and color a beautiful aquarium.
Fit the Fishes is a roll-and-write (or rather; roll-and-draw) for children ages 4 and up.

First impression

Unlike what I usually do, I went into this game completely uninformed. So when I opened the box, I had no idea what kind of game I had in my hands.
The box did not immediately appeal to me, but it is incredibly cheerful and colorful, which is what you expect from a children’s game.
And then; I read the rules and was thrilled, I could not wait to play this game. Which in itself is quite remarkable. After all, Fit the Fishes is a children’s game and I am not a child.
Besides, it’s a roll-and-write, nothing wrong with that, I like it from time to time, but it’s not something I get excited about…. normally.
So, after studying the rules of the game, I summoned my children to play a game….

How is the game played?

The rulebook describes 3 different levels, all of which have slightly different conditions and rules. But basically, Fit the Fishes is played as follows;
Each player gets an aquarium and on the table the round marker is placed.
Taking turns, players roll the die. That which the die shows, the player must now draw in his aquarium*.
This drawing is done by tracing the various stencils.
Depending on the level being played, 5 or 7 rounds are played.
After these rounds, the players add up their scores.
Basically, each fish scores 1 point. Fish food yields a point if it is inside a fish of the same shape. Fish yield an extra point if they touch algae of the same type (angular or rounded).
Furthermore, each level has some additional elements (such as a turtle and a treasure chest), which make the game more difficult and challenging.

*I didn’t find the game rules very clear here; I suspect that each player throws for themselves and draws their own result. But you could also play it so that all players draw the same thing.

What do we think of Fit the Fishes?

Full of enthusiasm, I began a game of Fit the Fishes with the kids. Leonore plays along with everything, Mikolaj is a lot more critical.
The enthusiasm was definitely not dampened during the game. Leonore played with tremendous pleasure.
However, she (4,5) found it a bit difficult to remember the conditions, perhaps a cheat sheet would come in handy.
But Mikolaj (6,5) also enjoyed the game and willingly joined in, which is quite unique as he is very selective in the games he plays.
As an adult, I also found it a very fun game to play (with).

Big advantage I find is the wide variety of elements and conditions. The rulebook describes 3 levels, but basically you can decide which elements to add and/or omit. This makes the game well adaptable for any age.
The theme is fantastically elaborate and the colored aquariums, crazy shaped fish and wiggling algae do incredibly well with children.
The stencils from which to draw are sturdy and ensure that even the youngest children are perfectly capable of “drawing over” their fish in their aquariums.
The included colored pencils, to color in your drawing afterwards, are a nice touch.

Fit the Fishes is a fun introduction to roll-and-write, but without numbers, crosses or cross-offs, but by making a beautiful drawing. Which you can also color in afterwards.

As a children’s game, this game gets a big 8 from us. From the age of 4 the easiest level (with some help) can be played well. For older children you can see what elements you add to keep it fun.
For adults this is also a fun game to play, so as a family game this one also gets a very good score.
