In Gift of Tulips bezoeken tulpen liefhebbers het Amsterdamse tulpenfestival en bouwen kleurrijke boeketten.
Spelers kunnen de waarde van de verschillende tulpen in de tulpenmarkt veranderen en zo het slot proberen te beïnvloeden.
Gift of Tulips is een snel kaartspel in overduidelijk “Hollands” thema.
Wat wij ervan vinden? Dat lees je in deze review.

Eerste indruk
Het thema van Gift of Tulips is overduidelijk en is in werkelijk alles doorgevoerd. Het spel draait om de tulpen, die kleurrijk en mooi zijn afgebeeld. Maar ook het scorebord, de scoremarkeerders en overzichtskaarten zijn helemaal in ‘Hollands’ thema; Delfts blauw, een klomp, een molen en grachtenpanden. Het geheel klopt helemaal en het artwork is fantastisch.
Op de kaarten staat perfect aangegeven welke kaarten geschikt zijn voor een spel met respectievelijk 2, 3/4 of 5/6 spelers. Dit maakt het erg overzichtelijk.
Na het lezen van de regels is het duidelijk wat de bedoeling is en kun je meteen beginnen met spelen.

Hoe wordt Gift of Tulips gespeeld?

De voorbereiding voor het spelen is kort. (Een groot voordeel).
Ergens op tafel, waar iedereen er makkelijk bij kan, worden de 4 marktkaarten op volgorde geplaatst.
Uit de stapel met tulpenkaarten worden een aantal kaarten verwijderd (afhankelijk van het aantal spelers). Vervolgens worden de 2 bovenste kaarten van deze stapel getrokken en in de markt gelegd onder de eerste en tweede rang.

Nu mag elke speler 2 kaarten van de stapel pakken. Een hiervan plaatst hij in zijn eigen tuin, de andere kaart wordt in het “geheime festival” geplaatst.
Nu kan het spel beginnen.

De speler die aan de beurt is, pakt een kaart van de stapel.
Nu moet hij deze kaart op één van de volgende 3 plaatsen neerleggen;
– In zijn eigen tuin
– In de tuin van een andere speler
– In het festival
( Ofwel in de markt, ofwel in het “geheime” festival. )

Nu pakt de speler nog een kaart van de stapel en beslist waar hij deze wilt plaatsen. Maar let op, dit mag niet dezelfde plaats zijn als waar de vorige kaart geplaatst is.

Het plaatsen van tulpen in je eigen of andermans tuin, levert punten op afhankelijk van de positie van die tulp in de markt.
Daarnaast wil je graag tulpen in jouw eigen tuin sparen voor de eindtelling.
Door een tulp in de markt te plaatsen kun je de positie hiervan aanpassen.
De tulp met in totaal de meeste punten schuift naar plek 1, die met de minste punten op plek 4, etc.
Zo verandert de waarde van de tulpen in de markt continu.
Een tulp in het geheime festival plaatsen kan van belang zijn voor de eindtelling.

Wanneer de trekstapel leeg is, eindigt het spel. Nu wordt het geheime festival geschud en worden hiervan de bovenste 5 kaarten in de markt gelegd.
Indien van toepassing, veranderen de tulpen weer van rang.
Nu is het tijd voor de eindtelling; De tulp op rang 1 levert de meeste punten op; De speler(s) met de hoogste waarde van die tulp in de tuin krijgen punten. Daarna volgen de tulpen op rang 2 en 3. De tulp op rang 4 levert geen punten meer op.

Wat vinden wij van Gift of Tulips?

Laten we beginnen te zeggen dat ik echt verliefd ben op het thema, de uitwerking ervan, maar vooral het artwork. Dat is natuurlijk eigenlijk helemaal niet belangrijk, want een slecht spel dat er fantastisch uitziet, blijft een slecht spel. Maar toch, ik vind alle kaarten echt pareltjes en mocht het spel niet bevallen, kun je de kaarten altijd nog als huisdecoratie gebruiken.

Gift of Tulips speelt prima. Het speelt makkelijk en snel. Ideaal als spelletje tussendoor, voor mensen die niet vaak spellen spelen, of voor nieuwe/jongere spelers.
De regels zijn makkelijk, een beurt duurt niet lang, dus er is weinig wachttijd. Doordat de waarde van de tulpen steeds verandert, ligt het spel nooit stil.
De mechanismen in het spel zijn leuk; jezelf helpen, anderen helpen én de waarde van de tulpen veranderen. Persoonlijk vind ik het een ‘moeilijk’ spel. Je krijgt ontzettend het gevoel en het idee dat je veel invloed hebt en veel kunt beslissen, maar uiteindelijk hangt er toch ontzettend veel af van mazzel, geluk en wat je tegenstanders doen. Je bent vooral aan het inzetten op wat je denkt dat er gaat gebeuren, dat beïnvloeden van het resultaat is een stuk minder aan de orde. Dat maakt het absoluut geen slecht spel, maar dat maakt het wel geen spel voor mij.
Vind jij dat geen probleem? Houd je wel van een beetje gokken en je geluk beproeven? Dan is Gift of Tulips een prima spelletje.

First impression

The theme of Gift of Tulips is very clear and is implemented in absolutely everything. The game revolves around the tulips, which are depicted in a colorful and beautiful way. But the scoreboard, the score markers and the overview cards are also completely in the ‘Dutch’ theme; Delft blue, a clog, a windmill and canal houses. The whole thing is completely coherent and the artwork is fantastic.
The cards clearly indicate which cards are suitable for a game with 2, 3/4 or 5/6 players respectively. This makes it very clear.
After reading the rules, it is clear what the intention is and you can start playing right away.

How is Gift of Tulips played?

The preparation time before playing is short. (A big advantage).
The 4 market cards are placed in order somewhere on the table where everyone can easily reach them.
A number of cards are removed from the pile of tulip cards (depending on the number of players). Then the 2 top cards of this pile are drawn and placed in the market under the first and second ranks.

Now each player may take 2 cards from the pile. One of these he places in his own garden, the other card is placed in the “secret festival”.
Now the game can begin.

The player whose turn it is takes a card from the pile.
Now he must place this card in one of the following 3 places;
– In his own garden
– In another player’s garden
– At the festival
(Either in the market or at the “secret” festival.)

The player then takes another card from the deck and decides where to place it. But beware, it cannot be in the same place as the previous card.

Placing tulips in your own or someone else’s garden earns you points depending on the position of that tulip in the market.
You also want to save tulips in your own garden for the final count.
By placing a tulip in the market, you can adjust its position.
The tulip with the most points moves to first place, the one with the least points moves to fourth place, etc.
This way, the value of the tulips in the market changes constantly.
Placing a tulip in the secret festival can be important for the final count.

When the draw pile is empty, the game ends. Now the secret festival is shuffled and the top 5 cards are placed on the market.
If applicable, the tulips change rank again.
Now it is time for the final tally: the tulip in rank 1 earns the most points; the player(s) with the highest value of that tulip in their garden receive points. Then the tulips in ranks 2 and 3 follow. The tulip in rank 4 earns no more points.

What do we think of Gift of Tulips?

Let’s start by saying that I am truly in love with the theme, the execution, but especially the artwork. Of course, that is not really important at all, because a bad game that looks fantastic is still a bad game. But still, I think all the cards are real gems and if you don’t like the game, you can always use the cards as home decorations.

Gift of Tulips is a great game. It is easy and fast to play. It is ideal as a game in between, for people who do not often play games, or for new/younger players.
The rules are easy, a turn does not take long, so there is little waiting time. Because the value of the tulips is constantly changing, the game never stands still.
The mechanisms in the game are fun; helping yourself, helping others and changing the value of the tulips. Personally, I find it a ‘difficult’ game. You get the feeling and the idea that you have a lot of influence and can make a lot of decisions, but in the end a lot depends on luck and what your opponents do. You are mainly betting on what you think will happen; influencing the result is much less of an issue. That doesn’t make it a bad game, but it does make it a game not for me.
