Math Masters is een avontuurlijk bordspel waarin spelers door middel van rekensommen over het bord bewegen en proberen als eerste het eindvak te bereiken. Het combineert educatie met spelplezier en maakt hoofdrekenen verrassend leuk, vooral voor kinderen die van cijfers en uitdagingen houden.

Inleiding: een eerste kennismaking met Math Masters

Toen ik Math Masters toevallig tegenkwam, wist ik dat ik het moest hebben. Mijn oudste zoon heeft namelijk een voorliefde voor rekenen. Met zijn 7,5 jaar vindt hij het heerlijk om moeilijke rekensommen te maken.

En kijk daar: van DutchGames kreeg ik een reviewexemplaar toegestuurd. Van tevoren had ik natuurlijk al wat rondgeneusd op de website en daar trof ik een soort magische wereld van getallen aan. Volgens de uitgever is Math Masters een educatief bordspel dat avontuur, strategie en hoofdrekenen combineert, waarbij spelers sommen oplossen om vooruit te komen op het bord. Het spel is ontworpen om rekenen spelenderwijs leuk te maken voor kinderen én volwassenen, zonder dat het voelt alsof je aan het leren bent.

En datzelfde gevoel straalt het spel ook uit: een soort magische wereld vol cijfers en berekeningen.

Het ziet er geweldig uit. Het bord is fantastisch vormgegeven en gemaakt van mooi materiaal. De “pionnen” zijn mooie personages van plexiglas en er zit een fantastische veelzijdige dobbelsteen bij. Al met al ziet het geheel er erg mooi en professioneel uit. Het regelboekje is bovendien duidelijk, waardoor we eigenlijk meteen kunnen beginnen met spelen.

Hoe wordt het gespeeld?

Math Masters behoeft maar weinig uitleg.

Elke speler kiest een personage en plaatst deze op het vakje met getal 1. Vervolgens mogen spelers om de beurt een kaart van de stapel pakken. Veruit de meeste kaarten zijn rekenkaarten. Op zo’n kaart staat een som. Bij deze sommen gebruik je het getal van het vak waar je op staat (aangegeven met een ?) en vaak ook het getal van de dobbelsteen.

De uitkomst van de som bepaalt naar welk vakje je je personage vervolgens moet verplaatsen.

Cijfers & getallen – weet jij het verschil?

Cijfers zijn de tien symbolen 0 t/m 9 waarmee getallen worden geschreven. Je kunt ze vergelijken met de letters van het alfabet, waarmee woorden worden gevormd.

Naast de somkaarten zijn er ook een aantal speciale kaarten, zoals een +1/-1-kaart, die handig kan zijn aan het eind om precies op het laatste vakje uit te komen. Ook is er een teleporteer-kaart, waarmee je je pion simpelweg naar een ander vakje mag verplaatsen zonder te rekenen.

De speler die als eerste op het laatste vakje uitkomt, 100 of 210, afhankelijk van het gekozen bord, heeft gewonnen. Maar let op: je moet precies op dat getal uitkomen. Wanneer de uitkomst van de som hoger is, blijf je staan waar je staat.

Wat vinden wij van Math Masters?

Allereerst complimenten voor het maken van dit type spel. Een écht educatief spel maken dat ook nog leuk speelt, is namelijk ontzettend lastig. Sterker nog: vaak lukt dat niet. Het educatieve doel (in dit geval: rekenen oefenen) overschaduwt dan al snel het spelplezier.
Math Masters is daarin, wat mij betreft, redelijk goed geslaagd.

Het eerste dat opvalt is de fantastische uitvoering van het spel. De magische uitstraling spreekt tot de verbeelding en de gekozen materialen zorgen ervoor dat het geheel luxe aanvoelt. Ondanks het duidelijke educatieve doel voelt het spel bovendien nergens ‘schools’ aan. Dat helpt enorm om kinderen enthousiast te maken.

Ook de rekenopgaven zelf zijn goed gekozen. Ze zijn uitdagend genoeg om interessant te blijven, maar niet zo ingewikkeld dat het spel vastloopt. Daarnaast voelt de verhouding tussen de gewone somkaarten en de speciale kaarten goed uitgebalanceerd, waardoor het spel regelmatig verrassende momenten heeft.

Toch zijn er ook een paar kanttekeningen te plaatsen. De speelduur kan bijvoorbeeld behoorlijk oplopen, zeker bij jongere kinderen. Omdat je precies op het laatste vakje moet uitkomen, kan een potje soms langer duren dan je zou verwachten.

Daarnaast vind ik de leeftijdsaanduiding van 6+ op de doos wat optimistisch. Dat werkt eigenlijk alleen als kinderen samen spelen of als ze al erg goed zijn in rekenen. Een voorbeeld van een som op het lagere niveau is bijvoorbeeld 63 + 7 − 11 + 3, en dat zijn geen sommen die de gemiddelde zesjarige zelfstandig kan oplossen.

Tot slot voelt het spel voor kinderen niet altijd helemaal eerlijk. Soms rekenen ze een som perfect uit, maar komen ze toch op een lager getal op het bord terecht. Dat kan voor jonge spelers een beetje frustrerend zijn.

Zou ik dit spel aanraden voor in het gemiddelde gezin? Waarschijnlijk niet direct.
Maar voor basisscholen zou ik dit spel absoluut aanraden. Met dit spel wordt rekenen namelijk écht leuk. Heb je kinderen die rekenen leuk vinden, of die misschien wat extra oefening kunnen gebruiken? Dan is Math Masters zeker een plekje in de spellenkast waard.

Math Masters is een mooi vormgegeven en origineel rekenspel dat educatie en spelplezier op een geslaagde manier weet te combineren. Hoewel de speelduur soms wat lang kan zijn en de moeilijkheidsgraad hoger ligt dan de leeftijd op de doos doet vermoeden, is het een leuke en uitdagende manier om rekenen spelenderwijs te oefenen. Vooral voor kinderen die rekenen leuk vinden én voor gebruik in de klas is dit een waardevolle toevoeging.

When I first came across Math Masters, I immediately knew I wanted it. My oldest son has a real love for math. At 7½ years old, he absolutely enjoys solving difficult arithmetic problems.

And then, as luck would have it, I received a review copy from DutchGames. Before it arrived, I had already browsed around on the website and discovered a kind of magical world of numbers. According to the publisher, Math Masters is an educational board game that combines adventure, strategy, and mental math, where players solve equations to move forward on the board. The game is designed to make practicing math fun for both children and adults, without it feeling like learning.

That same feeling is reflected in the game itself: a kind of magical world filled with numbers and calculations.

The game looks fantastic. The board is beautifully designed and made from high-quality materials. The “pawns” are lovely plexiglass characters and the game includes a great multi-sided die. Altogether, the components look very polished and professional. The rulebook is also clear, so we were able to start playing almost immediately.

How Is It Played?

Math Masters requires very little explanation.

Each player chooses a character and places it on the space marked with the number 1. Players then take turns drawing a card from the deck. Most of the cards are math cards. Each of these cards contains a math problem. In these problems, you use the number of the space you are currently standing on (indicated with a ?) and often also the number rolled on the die.

The result of the equation determines which space you move your pawn to next.

Digits & Numbers – Do You Know the Difference?Digits are the ten symbols 0 through 9 used to write numbers. You can compare them to the letters of the alphabet, which are used to form words.

In addition to the math cards, there are also several special cards, such as a +1/-1 card, which can be useful near the end of the game to land exactly on the final space. There is also a teleport card, which allows you to move your pawn to another space without solving a math problem.

The player who reaches the final space first—100 or 210, depending on the board being used—wins the game. However, you must land exactly on that number. If the result of the equation is higher than the final space, you remain where you are.

What Do We Think of Math Masters?

First of all, compliments to the designers for creating this type of game. Making a truly educational game that is also genuinely fun to play is extremely difficult. In fact, it often doesn’t work. The educational goal—in this case practicing math—often ends up overshadowing the gameplay.

In my opinion, Math Masters succeeds reasonably well in finding that balance.

The first thing that stands out is the fantastic production quality. The magical theme sparks the imagination and the chosen materials give the game a premium feel. Despite the clear educational purpose, the game never really feels “school-like,” which helps a lot in getting children excited about playing.

The math problems themselves are also well designed. They are challenging enough to stay interesting, but not so difficult that the game comes to a halt. In addition, the balance between the regular math cards and the special cards feels well thought out, creating occasional surprising moments during the game.

That said, there are also a few points worth mentioning. The playtime can become quite long, especially for younger children. Because you must land exactly on the final space, a game can sometimes last longer than you might expect.

I also find the 6+ age rating on the box somewhat optimistic. That might work if children play together or if they are already quite strong at math. For example, a problem from the lower level might look like 63 + 7 − 11 + 3, which is not something the average six-year-old can solve independently.

Finally, the game does not always feel completely fair from a child’s perspective. Sometimes they solve a problem perfectly but still end up moving to a lower number on the board. For younger players, that can feel a bit frustrating.

Would I recommend this game for the average family? Probably not immediately.

However, I would absolutely recommend it for elementary schools. With this game, practicing math genuinely becomes fun. If you have children who enjoy math—or who might benefit from some extra practice—Math Masters is definitely worth a spot on the game shelf.
