Monza

Autodromo Nazionale Monza is een 5,793 km lang circuit gelegen bij de plaats Monza in het noorden van Italië. Het circuit bestaat uit lange rechte stukken en snelle veelal rechter bochten en enkele korte chicanes. Ondanks meerdere pogingen om de hoge snelheden te matigen is Monza nog steeds het hogesnelheidscircuit bij uitstek.

De titel van het spel verraadt het al; Monza is een racespel.

Hoe wordt het gespeeld?

De regels zijn heel simpel;
Elke beurt gooit de speler 6 dobbelstenen. Deze dobbelstenen hebben kleurtjes. Nu wordt op de racebaan gekeken naar welk vlak de speler kan racen. Je mag alle dobbelstenen gebruiken, je mag opzij rijden maar niet achteruit. Dobbelstenen die niet gebruikt kunnen worden, vervallen.

Wanneer de eerste speler over de finish is, mogen de andere spelers nog proberen om over de finish te komen. Mocht (één van) hen dit lukken, dan is de winnaar degene die het minst aantal dobbelstenen nodig had om over de finish te komen.

Wat vinden wij van Monza?

Over het algemeen ben ik ‘fan’ van de kinderspellen van HABA. Als ik in de kringloopwinkel loop, speur ik altijd als eerst de spellenkast af op de bekende gele dozen. Dat wil overigens niet zeggen dat alle HABA spellen goed of leuk zijn, er zijn ook tegenvallers, maar over het algemeen zit je met HABA wel goed.
Dat geldt ook voor Monza. Monza is een leuk racespelletje dat snel gespeeld wordt. De regels zijn zo simpel dat ze binnen een halve minuut zijn uitgelegd. Het grote voordeel aan dit spel vind ik dat kinderen echt kennis leren maken met tactische overwegingen. Hoewel nog heel klein, is het correct gebruiken van de dobbelstenen echt een goede oefening. Ze moeten vooruit (kunnen) kijken welke kleuren ze eventueel in de vakken daarna nog nodig hebben.
Door het thema is dit spel ook heel geschikt voor jongens, i.t.t. de grote hoeveelheid schattige, lieve en roze spellen die er op de markt zijn.
De houten raceauto’s en het zeer gedetailleerd uitgewerkte speelbord werken ontzettend mee aan de spelbeleving.
Wat ons betreft krijgt Monza een dikke voldoende!

How is it played?

The rules are very simple;
Each turn, the player rolls 6 dice. These dice have colors. Now, on the racetrack, the player looks to see which plane he can race on. You may use all the dice, you may move sideways but not backwards. Dice that cannot be used are discarded.

When the first player crosses the finish line, the other players may still try to cross the finish line. If (one of) them succeeds, the winner is the player who needed the fewest dice to cross the finish line.

What do we think of Monza?

I am generally a fan of HABA children’s games. When I visit the thrift store, I always search the game shelf for the familiar yellow boxes. That is not to say that all HABA games are good or fun, there are also disappointments, but in general you can’t go wrong with HABA.
That also goes for Monza. Monza is a fun racing game that is played quickly. The rules are so simple that they can be explained in less than half a minute. The big advantage of this game, in my opinion, is that children really learn about tactical considerations. Although they are still very young, the correct use of the dice is really good practice. They have to (be able to) look ahead to see which colors they might need in the subsequent spaces.
The theme also makes this game very suitable for boys, unlike the large number of cute, sweet and pink games on the market.
The wooden racing cars and the highly detailed game board contribute enormously to the game experience.
As far as we are concerned, Monza gets a big thumbs up!
