Pak je cocktailshaker en je dobbelstenen: Piña Coladice is een dobbelspel dat perfect lijkt te passen bij een ontspannen borrelavond. Kleurrijke viltjes, houten cocktails en een thema dat meteen een zomers gevoel oproept. Maar speelt het spel net zo lekker weg als een goede Piña colada? Tijd om de dobbelstenen te rollen en dat uit te zoeken.
De eerste kennismaking met Piña Coladice
Piña Coladice dankt zijn naam aan de Piña colada.
Een pina colada (Spaans: “piña”, ‘ananas’ en “colada”, ‘gezeefd’) is een alcoholische longdrink-cocktail op basis van witte rum, ananassap en kokosmelk of kokosroom.

Piña Coladice is een samentrekking van Piña colada en dice (dobbelstenen).
Ik bedenk me nu dat ik dit ooit moest leren op de middelbare school: pleonasme, tautologie, (foutieve) samentrekking… De eerlijkheid gebiedt me te zeggen dat dit eigenlijk de eerste keer is dat ik hier sindsdien weer eens over nadenk.
Maar goed.
Cocktails en dobbelstenen: dat is precies wat je in dit spel terugvindt. In de doos zitten viltjes, dobbelstenen en houten cocktail-meeples. Het geheel ziet er heerlijk kleurrijk uit.
Hoe wordt het gespeeld?
Piña Coladice voelt een beetje als een kruising tussen boter-kaas-en-eieren en Yahtzee.
We beginnen met een grid van 16 viltjes (4 bij 4). In totaal zijn er 25 verschillende viltjes en de plaatsing is willekeurig, dus het grid ziet er elke keer anders uit.
Om beurten gooien de spelers met de dobbelstenen, maximaal drie keer. Daarna wordt gekeken of er een resultaat gescoord kan worden. Sommige viltjes zijn ‘makkelijk’, zoals twee vieren, en leveren 1 punt op. Andere zijn lastiger, zoals een grote straat, maar leveren meer punten op.
De speler zet vervolgens een van zijn cocktails op het gescoorde viltje en noteert de punten op de kaart.
Liggen er aangrenzend aan het zojuist gescoorde viltje al cocktails van dezelfde speler? Dan scoort hij boven op de normale score nog eens 1 punt per aangrenzend viltje.
Het spel kan op drie manieren eindigen:
-een van de spelers heeft 20 punten behaald (winst)
-een van de spelers heeft 4 cocktails op een rij gehaald (winst)
-de cocktails zijn op (in dat geval wint de speler met de meeste punten)
Wat vinden wij van Piña Coladice?
De eerste keer dat ik Piña Coladice speelde, was ik enthousiast. De vormgeving sprak me aan en de eenvoud van het spel voelde prettig. Ik schafte het spel aan en besloot het nog eens met wat andere (doel)groepen te proberen.
Daar liep ik helaas een beetje vast.
Doorgewinterde spelers hadden vaak niet zo’n zin in “Yahtzee met een twist”. Bij minder ervaren spelers merkte ik juist dat zij de vormgeving en uitwerking , die ik zelf juist kan waarderen, wat chaotisch en onoverzichtelijk vonden. Ook vonden zij het lastig dat er meerdere manieren zijn om te winnen.
Daarmee zie ik meteen het zwakke punt van dit spel: het zit een beetje tussen twee doelgroepen in. Voor niet-spelers is het soms net wat te veel, voor ervaren spelers juist wat te weinig.
Betekent dat dat niemand het leuk vindt? Zeker niet. Maar de groep die er echt blij van wordt, is wel wat kleiner. Bovendien is het geen spel dat bij ons heel regelmatig op tafel komt. Het werkt vooral goed als luchtige opener van een spelavond, of voor spelers die graag Yahtzee spelen maar eens iets anders willen proberen.
Ik denk dat Piña Coladice, dankzij het vrolijke thema, goed past in de kast van een (spellen)café of bij een borrelavondje met vrienden. Voor de spellenclub of de gemiddelde spellenkast thuis is het misschien iets minder vanzelfsprekend.
Conclusie
Piña Coladice is een vrolijk en toegankelijk dobbelspel dat het vooral goed doet als luchtige opener van een spelavond of tijdens een gezellige borrel. Verwacht geen diep strategisch spel, maar wel een kleurrijk spel dat je er makkelijk even bij pakt. En soms is dat precies waar je zin in hebt.
Piña Coladice krijgt van mij het eindcijfer: 6/10.

The first encounter with Piña Coladice
Piña Coladice owes its name to the Piña colada.

I now realize that I once had to learn about this in secondary school: pleonasm, tautology, (incorrect) contraction… To be honest, this is actually the first time I’ve thought about it again since then.
Anyway.
Cocktails and dice: that is exactly what you will find in this game. The box contains coasters, dice and wooden cocktail meeples. The whole thing looks wonderfully colorful.
How is it played?
Piña Coladice feels a bit like a cross between tic-tac-toe and Yahtzee.
We start with a grid of 16 coasters (4 by 4). In total there are 25 different coasters and the placement is random, so the grid looks different every time.
Players take turns rolling the dice, up to three times. After that, it is checked whether a result can be scored. Some coasters are ‘easy’, such as two fours, and give 1 point. Others are more difficult, such as a large straight, but give more points.
The player then places one of their cocktails on the scored coaster and writes down the points on the card.
Are there already cocktails from the same player adjacent to the coaster that was just scored? Then the player scores an additional 1 point per adjacent coaster on top of the normal score.
The game can end in three ways:
-one of the players has reached 20 points (win)
-one of the players has placed 4 cocktails in a row (win)
-the cocktails run out (in that case the player with the most points wins)
What do we think of Piña Coladice?
The first time I played Piña Coladice, I was enthusiastic. The design appealed to me and the simplicity of the game felt pleasant. I bought the game and decided to try it again with some other (target) groups.
Unfortunately, that’s where I ran into a bit of a wall.
Seasoned players often weren’t very interested in “Yahtzee with a twist”. With less experienced players, I noticed that they found the design and execution — which I personally appreciate — a bit chaotic and unclear. They also found it difficult that there are multiple ways to win.
That immediately shows what I see as the weak point of this game: it sits a bit between two target groups. For non-gamers it can sometimes be just a bit too much, while for experienced players it’s a bit too little.
Does that mean nobody likes it? Certainly not. But the group that really gets excited about it is somewhat smaller. Moreover, it’s not a game that comes to the table very regularly for us. It mainly works well as a light opener to a game night, or for players who enjoy Yahtzee but want to try something a little different.
I think Piña Coladice, thanks to its cheerful theme, fits well on the shelf of a (board game) café or during a drinks evening with friends. For a gaming club or the average home game collection, it may be a little less obvious.
Conclusion
Piña Coladice is a cheerful and accessible dice game that works especially well as a light opener to a game night or during a cozy drinks evening. Don’t expect a deeply strategic game, but do expect a colorful game that you can easily bring to the table for a quick play. And sometimes that’s exactly what you’re in the mood for.
