Gem Getter Pro & Gem Getter Galactic – Een eerste indruk
Gem Getter Pro en Gem Getter Galactic zijn zogenaamde PnP-spellen. PnP staat voor Print and Play.

In Gem Getter Pro and Gem Getter Galactic, you try to dig as efficient a mine as possible in order to become the best gem collector.

Gem Getter Pro & Gem Getter Galactic – A First Impression
Gem Getter Pro and Gem Getter Galactic are so-called PnP games. PnP stands for Print and Play. The name says it all: you don’t buy these games in a store. Instead, you download a file, print it out, and can start playing right away.
You can download Gem Getter Pro and Gem Getter Galactic Here.
At first glance, Gem Getter Pro seems like an ideal game to take on holiday. Besides the printed sheets, all you need are two dice in different colours.
There are lots of different ‘maps’ available for both the Pro and Galactic versions. This makes the game fun and varied, as you can play a different ‘version’ of the game every time.
The rules are incredibly extensive, but honestly, they are almost unnecessary. The different phases of the game are clearly described on the Roll Sheet, and the scoring conditions are explained on the Dig Sheet. Only the Galactic version has one or two things that you really need to know from the rulebook. Even there, the rest of the information is clearly shown on the two sheets you need to play the game.
This game really comes into its own when printed in colour, because every gem has its own shape and colour!
How do you play?
Gem Getter Pro, Gem Getter Galactic (and also Gem Getter Saves Christmas, a special Christmas edition) all play essentially the same way. I will explain the basics below. When you download and print the game yourself, you can take a closer look at the details. 😉
The Roll Sheet is placed in the centre of the table. Each player then receives a Dig Sheet (obviously, they all need to be the same).
The game is played over nine rounds. In each round, two dice are rolled and placed on the Roll Sheet. These dice indicate which polyomino shapes may be dug. Each player chooses either the coloured die or the white die, and then draws the corresponding shape in their mine.
The first shape must touch the top of the mine, because that is where you start digging. Subsequent excavations must be adjacent to a previously excavated section. Every gem that is excavated is recorded on the right-hand side of the Dig Sheet.
After the players have done this, they check whether they have completed any full rows or columns. If so, they receive a bonus for them.
Each mine also contains boulders. To excavate these, all eight surrounding spaces must have been excavated. These boulders do not need to be excavated in order to complete a full row or column.
After nine rounds, the game ends. The final round can sometimes take a little longer, because, if you play your cards right, you can create several chain reactions in a row.
The scoring differs for each gem and is clearly indicated on the Dig Sheet. For example, the first three gems should be collected in roughly equal amounts, because you score points for the number of complete sets you have. Other gems, for example, score points based on the number of completed columns and/or rows, or in combination with other gems.
It is therefore a good idea to study the different scoring conditions before the game and keep them in mind while playing.
Obviously, the player with the most points wins.
What do we think of Gem Getter Pro and Gem Getter Galactic?
What a wonderful little game this is! It is absolutely ideal to take on holiday. You can explain it to anyone, and everyone can join in, as long as you have printed enough Dig Sheets.
Despite the simple rules, it is a wonderfully engaging puzzle. Which shapes can you place where, and how do you make sure you score as highly as possible? For example, you want to create sets of the first three gems, but they are not always located close to one another. So you will have to dig deeper as well. Which choices will you make?
It is certainly not a difficult game, but it is nicely tactical. The most fun is when you manage to create some impressive chain reactions.
Gem Getter Pro and Gem Getter Saves Christmas are, apart from the theme, exactly the same. Both are fun games that you can play with the whole family or on your own.
Gem Getter Galactic feels like a successor to Gem Getter Pro. The basic gameplay is still the same, but there are different bonuses and different scoring conditions. This means Gem Getter Galactic requires just a little more thought.
The game plays wonderfully both with multiple players and solo. When playing solo, I often play several games in a row. A solo game takes around 10 to 15 minutes, and when I finish, I always want to try to beat my score by playing again.
The wide variety of Dig Sheets (A through H) also provides plenty of variety in the mines. There is also an A and a B Roll Sheet for even more variety. The Dig Sheets do not necessarily increase in difficulty, but some are definitely more challenging than others.
Both the Dig Sheets and the Roll Sheets contain quite a lot of information, meaning you actually (almost) do not need the rulebook. Despite this, everything is incredibly clear and easy to understand. I also think it looks really great, and you genuinely get the feeling that you are digging for gems.
All in all, I think everyone should download, print, and play Gem Getter Pro or Gem Getter Galactic. Take it on holiday, on a trip, in the back of the car, or to a picnic. You can play it anywhere and with anyone. And it definitely will not get boring quickly. (Says the person who played it around 25 times in three weeks.)
All in all, more than enough reason to give Gem Getter Pro and Gem Getter Galactic an 8.5/10.
