Clever Junior Junglefeest – Een eerste indruk

Clever Junior Jungle Party – A First Impression
At first glance, Clever Junior Jungle Party looks a lot like Clever Junior, which I reviewed earlier.
The artwork is different, but just as cheerful and child-friendly. The box also states that the game is suitable for children aged 5 and up.
After reading the rules, though, I got the feeling that Clever Junior Jungle Party is quite a bit more complex than Clever Junior. The score sheet also looks rather busy at first. That doesn’t necessarily have to be a problem; perhaps it becomes more intuitive after playing a few times. At least the rules are clear, so you can get started quickly.
How is it played?
Each player receives a score sheet and a pencil. The goal is to collect as many colored stars as possible.
Players do this by rolling the five dice. The active player rolls the dice and then chooses one background color, allowing them to use all the dice of that color. The colors correspond to the categories on the score sheet. Each color/category has its own way of scoring and marking off spaces.
Green; butterflies and flowers.
You need at least one butterfly. This determines which row you can mark off. You can then mark off the flower(s) you rolled in this row.
Blue; elephants.
If you choose the blue dice, you must roll them again. You then choose one color and mark off as many spaces as the number of dice you rolled in that color.
Pink; coconuts.
Place the pink dice next to each other and see how many complete coconuts you can make. You can mark off that many coconuts.
Purple; bananas.
You can mark off the number of bananas you roll. Be careful, though: bananas that appear in bunches must be marked off all at once.
During the game, you will encounter various bonuses, indicated by colored circles. As soon as you reach one of these colored circles, you may mark off an additional space in the corresponding color category.
The dice the active player does not use are returned to the center of the table. The inactive players can then also choose one category/color. However, keep in mind that if the active player cannot or does not want to use dice of a chosen color, those dice are also returned to the center.
When a player has circled a large colored star, the game ends. Play then continues until everyone has had the same number of turns.
The player who has collected the most stars wins.
What do we think of Clever Junior Jungle Party?
I have to be honest: for me, Clever Junior Jungle Party feels just a little too complex for a game recommended for ages 5 and up. The theme and artwork are a perfect fit for that age group, but I do wonder to what extent an average five-year-old can actually play this game independently.
In my opinion, there are just a few too many small exceptions and additional steps. For example, the blue dice have to be rolled again, and with the pink dice you have to carefully look at which combinations you can make. None of these rules are particularly complicated on their own, but together they can make the game a bit much for the youngest players.
The score sheet doesn’t really help in that regard either. It looks incredibly fun and playful, but precisely because of that, it isn’t always as easy to read. Perhaps this becomes less noticeable after playing several games, but during my first few sessions, I found that there was quite a lot of information on a single sheet.
Is it all bad, then? No, absolutely not. Clever Junior Jungle Party is certainly an enjoyable little game, and there are some interesting choices to make. Moreover, in this version, it seems that the inactive players are less likely to get unlucky than in Clever Junior. I consider that a clear improvement, because even when it isn’t your turn, you still have something to do.
Do you enjoy playing Clever Junior with your children and are they ready for the next step? Then Clever Junior Jungle Party could certainly be a nice addition. If you’re looking to play a Clever Junior game with your children for the first time, however, I would recommend starting with the original. In my opinion, that one feels better suited to the youngest players.
So, Clever Junior Jungle Party is certainly not a bad game, but for me, it just lacks the accessibility I expect from a children’s game for ages 5 and up.
That’s why I give Clever Junior Jungle Party a 6.5/10.
