What happens when the king dies? The jungle descends into chaos until a new king emerges—but how is this successor chosen? Perhaps all the animals of the jungle play this game to determine who will become the next king; will you join in?
Gameplay
At the start of the game, two face-down draw piles are placed in the center of the table. The starting player chooses the top card from one of the two piles and reveals it. The player may then choose to add this card to their own row, or return it to the top of either draw pile and draw the top card from the other pile instead. After drawing this second card, the player is required to add it to their row.
Each card possesses a special ability that allows the player to perform a specific action when the card is played.
Once a player has collected four cards of the same type in their row, they receive half a crown. The game ends as soon as a player collects a second half of the crown, at which point that player immediately wins the game.
The base game features eight different animal species, and the expansion introduces two new animals to the battle for the throne. The two animals from the expansion can replace either the green-colored cards or the joker card from the base game; however, they cannot be used simultaneously. Below is a list of the animal species and their corresponding actions:
- Crocodile: Choose a card from any player’s row and place it at the bottom of either face-down draw pile.
- Crab: Choose a card from any player’s row and move it one position to the left or right.
- Monkey: Swap this card with another card from any player’s row.
- Hermit Crab: Take an additional turn, provided you have at least one “Crab” card in your row.
- Octopus: Win the round if you have three distinct pairs in your row.
- Parrot: Choose an animal and draw a card from one of the two stacks. If the animal matches the one on the card, play the card and perform its action. If it does not match, place the card back onto one of the two stacks.
- Lion: Win the round if your row contains 7 different cards (including this lion).
- Chameleon: This card counts as any other animal in your row; however, if you have two chameleons, you must immediately discard both cards by placing them at the bottom of one of the two stacks.
The two animals from the expansion are:
- Peacock: Replaces the crocodile in the game (if you choose to include it). Select a card from any player’s row, place it at the bottom of one of the two draw stacks, and replace it with the top card from that same stack.
- Praying Mantis: Replaces the chameleon in the game (if you choose to include it). This card counts as any animal. Select a card from your own row and place it at the bottom of one of the two draw stacks.
Game Mechanics
The game has elements of set collection as you try to get a collection of 4 of the same cards next to each other. There is also the possibility of antagonizing each other by stealing cards from others, but you have to be able to handle this.
My Humble Opinion
First and foremost, Collect is a card game that is perfect for playing with children. It is very simple, which is precisely where its strength lies. The cheerful art style fits this context well and works effectively for such a fast-paced game. It is an ideal card game to take along on vacation, thanks to its small box and the fact that you need nothing more than the cards themselves. It helps if you can remember which cards are placed back onto the deck, as doing so makes the game significantly easier for you. Ultimately, however, it is primarily a game of chance.
What makes the game so strong?
- The rules are easy to explain, making the game perfect for a quick session or for playing with children.
- It comes in a small box, so it’s convenient to take along wherever you go.
- I really like the colorful art style; it fits the lighthearted nature of the game perfectly.
- The expansion adds extra variety if you decide to play it more often.
Is it all just positive?
It is a game of chance for the most part, so if you cannot handle that, this might not be the game for you. It is very light (1.17/5 on BGG), making it quite straightforward and clear as to what needs to be done. This can be viewed as either a positive or a negative, though that naturally depends on the player.
Conclusion
The game has a fun setup and does exactly what it sets out to do, with a nice style. Personally, I find it a bit too light to play often (or in quick succession), but it’s fine for an occasional game. I’d give it a 6/10, though I think it would be a perfect camping game for families with slightly older children.
