Lekker Lava – Een eerste indruk
Leonore (6,5) daarentegen is fan!

In Yummy Lava, the little dragons try to eat as much lava as possible. But to do that, they need to be in the very best spot! Position your dragon wisely, let the lava flow and chomp, chomp… will the lava end up in your dragon’s belly?
Yummy Lava is a simple and funny game for young children. What do we think of it? You can read all about it in this review!
Yummy Lava – A First Impression
What a delight! The box is wonderfully cheerful, and the same goes for everything inside. Despite the somewhat ‘dangerous’ volcano, lava streams and dragons, the overall look is actually quite adorable.
The little dragons need to be assembled before the first game. This is quite a fiddly task and, in hindsight, takes longer than playing a game itself. Fortunately, once assembled, you can simply store the dragons in the box. So it’s a one-time job.
And that actually goes for the entire game! You assemble the volcano and fill it with lava tokens just once. At the end of each game, you simply leave the tokens inside the volcano. This means that as soon as you take the game out of the cupboard, you can put it straight on the table and start playing. No preparation needed!
One thing to keep in mind: store the box horizontally and don’t tilt it when taking it out of the cupboard. Otherwise, you’ll have to pick up all the tokens first (I speak from experience by now ;)).
One big advantage is that, as an adult, you only have to set up the game once. After that, children can play it completely independently. They don’t need to prepare anything: just take off the lid and you’re ready to go!
The overall quality of the game is also excellent, with nice thick cardboard and beautiful wooden tokens.
How to Play?
Yummy Lava is incredibly simple to play, which is of course very handy for young players.
The active player rolls the die in the middle of the volcano. The number rolled determines how many lava tokens the player may take from the bag.
Next, starting with the active player and continuing clockwise, each player places their dragon next to one of the lava streams. Once everyone has chosen a spot, the active player may slide the lava tokens into the lava streams one by one. All tokens can be pushed into the same ‘slot’, but you can also spread them across multiple slots. The only exception is the lava streams occupied by a dragon: no tokens may be pushed into those.
By pushing the tokens in, the lava stream starts moving. All tokens that end up in the dragons’ bellies during this turn belong to their respective players.
Afterwards, everyone takes their dragon back and the next player takes their turn.
Depending on the number of players (two or more), any tokens that fall onto the table are either returned to the bag or discarded into the box.
When there are no longer enough tokens left in the bag to take, the game ends and it’s time to count the points.
There are four different types of tokens:
– Red, orange and yellow tokens, worth 1, 2 and 3 points respectively.
– Black tokens. For every black token that ends up in your dragon’s belly, you must discard the lava token with the highest value.
Everyone removes the tokens from their dragon’s belly and can easily use the printed score sheet to calculate who has won.
What Do We Think?
Well… Here’s where things get tricky. I’m a board game reviewer, but I’m also a mother of young children. And those young children are now at an age where they have a clear opinion of their own.
When I look at Yummy Lava, I see quite a few positives. The game looks attractive and has some lovely components. The rules are so simple that preschoolers can easily play it independently. And without even realising it, they also get to practise their hand-eye coordination. So far, everything sounds pretty positive!
But… to be completely honest? From a gameplay perspective, there’s not really all that much to it.
Rolling the die is entirely random: you simply take 4, 5 or 6 tokens from the bag. Placing your dragon then seems like a decision you actually have some control over. Naturally, you’d prefer to place your dragon next to a yellow token, as that one is worth the most points. But once you start sliding the tokens into the lava streams, you never really know where the movement will occur. You can look as carefully as you like and try to figure out where the tokens will go, but the chances of helping your opponents collect tokens are roughly just as high as the chances of helping yourself.
Back to the children. My eldest (8) is quite critical, and Yummy Lava isn’t really his cup of tea. Leonore (6.5), on the other hand, is a fan! The game regularly makes it to the table at her request. It’s funny, it’s fun, and the games are nice and short. Perhaps she actually enjoys the fact that you can win without necessarily being the best player.
Despite my doubts about the gameplay, we’re still giving Yummy Lava a 7. After all, it’s a children’s game, primarily aimed at younger children, and my youngest is a fan!
