A Gentle Rain

Haal adem en ontspan.

A Gentle Rain had ik al regelmatig voorbij zien komen, maar toch schafte ik het niet aan. De eenvoud van het spel vond ik niet helemaal in verhouding staan tot de prijs. Na lang wikken en wegen besloot ik het toch te kopen (ik had mijn spellenkast opgeruimd en daarmee wat geld verdiend 😉).

Nu het eenmaal in mijn kast staat, is natuurlijk de vraag: was het zijn geld waard? Dat lees je in deze review.

A Gentle Rain – Een eerste indruk

A Gentle Rain is een echt ‘zen’-spel. Alles straalt rust uit: het doosje, de onderdelen en zelfs de spelregels. Die zitten verwerkt in een klein boekje met mooie quotes. De regels zijn bovendien enorm eenvoudig en beloven inderdaad een heerlijk ontspannen spelletje.

Hoe wordt het gespeeld?

Schud alle tegels en leg ze op een gedekte stapel. Leg daarnaast de bloemenfiches klaar.

Draai één tegel om en leg deze op tafel. Vervolgens draai je steeds een nieuwe tegel om, die je zo neerlegt dat hij aansluit op een bestaande tegel.

Lukt het je om vier bloemen rondom een cirkel te voltooien? Dan mag je in die cirkel een bloemenfiche plaatsen.

Het spel eindigt op één van de volgende manieren:

Je hebt alle acht bloemen kunnen plaatsen. Je score is dan 8 (voor de bloemen) plus het aantal tegels dat je nog over hebt.
Alle tegels zijn op. In dat geval is je score gelijk aan het aantal bloemen dat je hebt weten te plaatsen.

Wat vind ik van A Gentle Rain?

A Gentle Rain is met afstand het meest relaxte spelletje dat ik in mijn kast heb staan.

Ik heb het inmiddels al meerdere keren gepakt om even te ontprikkelen. Gewoon met een kopje thee aan tafel zitten en rustig bloemen maken.

Het spel is ontzettend simpel, maar juist daarin schuilt de kracht. Het feit dat je niet echt kunt winnen of verliezen draagt alleen maar bij aan het ontspannen gevoel.

Ook de vormgeving verdient een compliment. De tegels zijn prachtig geïllustreerd en elke keer dat ik het spel speel ontdek ik weer een nieuw diertje op één van de tegels.

Aan het begin van deze review stelde ik de vraag of A Gentle Rain zijn geld waard is. Daar kan ik inmiddels volmondig ja op antwoorden. Hoewel het spel qua spelmechanieken niet veel om het lijf heeft, is het een heerlijke manier om even tot rust te komen. De onderdelen zijn stevig, prachtig vormgegeven en A Gentle Rain heeft bij mij inmiddels al voor heel wat fijne ontprikkelmomentjes gezorgd.

Het is een spel dat je gemakkelijk even op tafel legt om de boel de boel te laten en gewoon een paar minuten te genieten.

Dat alles maakt dat A Gentle Rain van mij een 7,5/10 krijgt.

I had seen A Gentle Rain pop up quite a few times, but I never bought it. Its simplicity didn’t quite seem to justify the price. After a lot of hesitation, I finally decided to pick it up (I’d recently tidied up my board game collection and made a bit of money in the process 😉).

Now that it has found a place on my shelf, the big question is: was it worth the money? You’ll find out in this review.

A Gentle Rain – First Impressions

A Gentle Rain is a true “zen” game. Everything about it radiates calm: the box, the components, and even the rulebook. Instead of a standard leaflet, you get a small booklet filled with beautiful quotes. The rules themselves are incredibly simple, promising exactly the kind of relaxing experience the game is aiming for.

How Do You Play?

Shuffle all the tiles and place them face down in a stack. Put the flower tokens nearby.

Turn over one tile and place it on the table. Then, continue revealing tiles one by one, placing each new tile so that it connects to at least one tile already in play.

Whenever you manage to complete a circle by surrounding it with four flowers, you may place a flower token in the centre of that circle.

The game ends in one of two ways:

If you manage to place all eight flower tokens, your score is 8 (for the flowers) plus the number of tiles left in the draw pile.
If you run out of tiles before placing all the flowers, your score is simply the number of flower tokens you managed to place.

What Do I Think of A Gentle Rain?

A Gentle Rain is by far the most relaxing game on my shelf.

I’ve already pulled it out several times whenever I wanted to unwind. Just sitting down with a cup of tea and quietly creating flowers is surprisingly soothing.

The game is incredibly simple, but that’s exactly where its strength lies. The fact that there isn’t really a traditional way to win or lose only adds to the calming atmosphere.

The artwork also deserves a special mention. The tiles are beautifully illustrated, and every time I play I discover another little animal hidden somewhere in the artwork.

At the beginning of this review, I asked whether A Gentle Rain is worth its price. My answer is a wholehearted yes. While the gameplay itself is fairly straightforward, it’s a wonderful little game for taking a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The components are sturdy, beautifully produced, and A Gentle Rain has already provided me with plenty of peaceful moments to unwind.

It’s the kind of game you can easily put on the table whenever you want to forget about everything else for a little while and simply enjoy the moment.

All of that earns A Gentle Rain a 7.5/10 from me.
